If you want to learn how DOS works, download LOIC and use wireshark to analyze the traffic.

Before you can use the tools, you will need to setup your own LAB, with a webserver and an attacker machine, to simulate the attack.

I've never used NS2 before, but if you have 2 machines lying around, you could install Apache (webserver) on one of them, and on the remaining machine install LOIC (tool used for DOSing).

On the webserver, install wireshark so you can capture the traffic for analyzing it later. That's how I would do it.
