I am very new to security, i was surfing different sites to try to get familar with the subject but i didnt come across any reliable "free sites".
would anyone like to jump start me? I am open to all knowledge and suggestions.

If you are really interested in learning network security, there are courses you could take. Like CEH, http://www.sans.org/, http://www.offensive-security.com/. Since they have a degree of complexity, you will have to start from somewhere, in order to familiarize yourself with the different techniques and methods.
I recommend, you watching the videos from the Hak5.org website, as well as from securitytube.net. Also the best way to learn all these things is to read, research and practice as you go along.
