I have been learning C and C++ over the last few years...

My problem is i don't know where to go next. I know how to use pointers, classes etc... in C++ but i haven't written an actual program, only assigments from the university(calculating arithmetic means, mean deviation etc)...

I have thought of joining some opensource project but i do not have prior experience...

Best way to go is to code a tool that you want, even if its something simple. Got a bunch of files you need to rename? Build something to do it for you. Like IRC? Build your own client. Etc.

Joining an Open Source project is also a brilliant idea - some offer a tutor-trainee setup (I believe Firefox does this?). If you don't want to join a "live project", download the latest version of a programs source code and modify it yourself. You'll learn the most by experimenting.
