It's a protection mechanism, and is checked frequently when making transactions.

does anyone know why the original post said bleached $5's instead of $1's? is it a different paper or just the people who tried it were stupid?
there is a security strip on the left side of the bill as in all denomanations above $5 so the security bar is there only it says five instead of 100 lol

does this apply to canada too, is it possible to use photoshop to edit money with an american version of photoshop? and about the feel, it is real, my sister is a chasier and once busted some 12 year old kid trying to use a fake 5$ bill lol, i couldnt stop laughing after i heard the story.
No you can't use photoshop, they started implementing counterfiet measures in like 6.0. Basically it can detect if your trying to counterfit something. I don't know how good it works though?

It IS the paper that's special, though you can chemically treat any paper to pass that dumb marker test.
Those pens contain an iodine based ink. Most/All paper used for printing is just cheap compressed wood pulp, which has a high starch content. Thus, when you run the iodine over the starch, it reacts and turns a dark violet/black.
Now, what about the paper used to print money? Well, it's not paper at all, but much closer to cloth, which isn't made from crushed cellular material, so it has minimal starch content.
Now, what's fun and not at all illegal?
Go to your bank and get a whole load of $2 bills. Buy some spray on starch, the type you use when you iron, and spray it on nice and thick on the bills and iron them. Then go somewhere and buy something for $50 or so, and break out the bills. :-)
Most people have no clue that $2 exist, and they'll be a helluva alot more confused when they run their little pen over it.
