I'm looking into different web designers that can import and manage .psd templates. I tried using adobe golive and though I loved the interface and compatibility with other adobe projects, apparently my P4 3.02ghz, 512mb ram machine was too slow to handle it. Yeah...go figure...Its very slow with photoshop as well..but unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a viable replacement for photoshop.

I'm sure the ram is the issue but given that 1gb so-dimm ram is going for about $200, it will be a cold day in hell before I upgrade my ram in order to run Adobe programs faster.

That being said I need something to which I can import psd templates and manage them. Manage is the crucial part of this since I'm sure most would allow me to import the template as image. But thats not what I need. I need to import all the layers and objects and crap like that. So if anybody knows of a web editor that does that I would appreciate it.

PSD files are generally a layered file that is proprietary to Adobe PhotoShop. However, this file format has become so popular over recent years, that many other graphic software programs (newer versions) have programmed their software to be compatible with this file format. Adobe PhotoShop is an expensive program, however, two programs that I know can open and edit PSD files which are less expensive and quite good are Jasc Paint Shop Pro 7 and Ulead PhotoImpact 7 & 8.

I probably wasn't very clear in my post. I'm happy editing templates in photoshop. What I need is a website maker that can import these psd templates so that I can add all the html, etc to it.

You can make html files with toshop (Imageready infact) by browsing File > Save for the net ... dans than choose html and image file (you'll have a html file and a /image/ dir (picture, or donno in english) )

Firstly you got to slice the template you got in Photoshop then go to File->Save As and save it as Images and HTML. It will then automatically give you the html code and the image folder. Now if you want to add text and stuff use Dreamweaver..

yep, I eventually ended up using dreamweaver too. Does what golive does but isn't that much of a resource hog.

After i made a template in photoshop and sliced it in imageready (you can find some good tutorials on slicing templates --> h**p://www.good-tutorials.com) i finish it with dreamweaver, i personally find this a very good editor, but i have to say you need some basic knowledge of html etc. Beside dreamweaver i also use the good old "notepad" editor.
