NetBeans which is optionally provided with the JDKs is a really good free Java editor with GUI design and a lot more.... so don't hesitate to take it !!

Eclipse is pretty good and comes close to the refactoring and generation capabilities of IntelliJ Idea (plus you can get it for the low affordable price of free) but I always felt its ability to be an IDE for multiple programming languages makes it a bit too heavy for just Java development (jack of all trades but a master of none).
A lot of programmers treat their IDEs (and more so for programming languages themselves) as if it were militant religion. In the end though, the best IDE is the one that makes you develop faster and better code since they all produce the same results.
