Sun Java JDK 1.5.0 (new features... take a look at it!!!):

Sun Java JDK 1.5.0 Documentation... a must if you want to code something

NetBeans which is optionally provided with the JDKs is a really good free Java editor with GUI design and a lot more.... so don't hesitate to take it !!

I only use Textpad (www.textpad.com, just a text editor but with colors for Java and others), but another nice program is Eclipse (www.eclipse.org) special for Java and is very good to make projects and has nice features/tricks

JCreator is a great freeware program that I use in school and at home. It supports Java, XML, BAT, etc. It has a good GUI and it has easy navigation through the documentation. Plus a good compiler
-- I don't work or host anything to do with JCreator but its a great freeware prog

If you can get your hands on it, the best commercial Java IDE i've ever used is IntelliJ Idea (http://www.jetbrains...idea/index.html). You could get an academic license for $99 or a free license if you can prove you are working on an open source project.
Eclipse is pretty good and comes close to the refactoring and generation capabilities of IntelliJ Idea (plus you can get it for the low affordable price of free) but I always felt its ability to be an IDE for multiple programming languages makes it a bit too heavy for just Java development (jack of all trades but a master of none).
A lot of programmers treat their IDEs (and more so for programming languages themselves) as if it were militant religion. In the end though, the best IDE is the one that makes you develop faster and better code since they all produce the same results.
