If you are looking for a gateway solution, SpamAssassin is probably the best known open source spam solution. Takes a little unix knowledge to configure, but is well worth it.
Trend Micro Interscan is also good if your after a windows solution and prepared to pay for it. Although you didnt say if you want a client side solution or a gateway style solution.

I had Mcaffee Anti-Spam. It worked so well when on high priority that it didnt' even let a single email go through

Never heard of any of these
I use Webroot Spy Sweeper and AdAware. Very old and outdated, I know. But they get the job done
Just use Mozilla to look at sites where you think you might get Spyware, and IE for everything else! That's how I do things, and not one virus to date
