This thread is so old, I doubt that it would work for even Cable modems anymore. So far as I know, there isn't any way to do it with your ADSL.

The reason why you can change downstream on cable modem is because this is set in a config file of your CM. Yes, I know you can read
Or you should hack your ISP and change your connection settings
And yes, nowadays it would be very hard to uncap your CM, unless you have a very stupid ISP.
I could explain everything now, but I'm not too familiar yet with all the security during provisioning of a CM. But know there is a checksum of a part of the config file (done with MD5) that needs to correspond with the checksum of the CMTS (something like that, it is more complicated though). That makes homebrew cfg files more difficult to set up. Then you have also certificates that need to correspond between CMTS and CM. And there are a few more securities. So, there is a lot of work to do (depending on your ISP).
If there is interest in this subject, I could make a topic about security in DOCSIS and EuroDOCSIS v1.0 ; v1.1; v2.0 and v3.0.
But it won't be finsihed before at least begin september. Because I still have to learn more also.
Anyone interested?

With that, this topic can finally be put to rest
