test release is out... 112 meg dl and is recommended by windows update service..page , but with the release there is no guarenteed suport which i find strange if update recommends it !

installed:

first thing to hit you is the new security screen: for 3 tools

(1)Firwall
(2)automatic updates
(3)Antivirus

if you have a firewall installed then turn their one OFF and hit the recommended button and tick the "i will monitor my own firewall"

do this also for AntiVirus if you have one installed

i recommend you keep the monitor Updates ON , bound to be quite a few in the early days.

you can change these settings via the control panel you will see the new Security Centre shield

also after you install , Recommend you use a defrag tool like diskeeper , etc, or the system defrag , files tend to get messed up uprgading

found out also its a bit of a memory hog... my free resources went down by 15% ..so some fine tuning is going to be needed

by the way take a look at the new firewall features... interesting

thats the end of my first impressions.... anyone add to this

Also worth noting:

How to diable Windows XP Firewall in SP2

How to sneak a program around XP Firewall in SP2

Both are batch files. The second one requires some editing to point to your EXE file.

I'm not installing it until it's offically out and stable....

this is just the first version- the chain goes
1) first release
2) patches to fix the vulnerabilities & bugs
3) Service pack because there's too many for hotfixes anymore (< MS has lots of these.)

btw- yeah, that section isn't open for trial members
