Netcat has been dubbed the network swiss army knife. It is a simple Unix utility which reads and writes data across network connections, using TCP or UDP protocol. It is designed to be a reliable "back-end" tool that can be used directly or easily driven by other programs and scripts. At the same time, it is a feature-rich network debugging and exploration tool, since it can create almost any kind of connection you would need and has several interesting built-in capabilities. Netcat is now part of the Red Hat Power Tools collection and comes standard on SuSE Linux, Debian Linux, NetBSD and OpenBSD distributions.

Ilya,
What it seems like your doing is opening netcat straight from the downloaded application window. If you type in a incorrect command, it will close itself.

Sooooooo.....get your trusty MS-DOS command line out and open netcat from there!
Im not using XP, but from what I know, go to START/RUN and type CMD.
You should see a black screen with something like:
C:\WINDOWS\Desktop>
Then, open your netcat directory (whereever you installed it). Its default dir name is "nc11nt".
You should now see C:\WINDOWS\(whatever directory)\nc11nt>
Type "nc" and voila...theres your netcat command line!

But seriously, its all in the readme.txt!
You gotta be able to walk before you can run, perhaps a little more research into the basics before using a tool like netcat?
Just my opinion :)

I believe it is the latest for windows. The Linux version may be a rev higher neo, so you may have to check the homepage I listed.

Ilya, yeah XP can be awkward with command line progs. What i do is drag or copy the little white DOS box for netcat to the desktop, then open command prompt [CMD] and just type nc - CMD line should then come up and your ready to go.
You could also try CRYPTCAT which is just Netcat with encryption.
Also a nice little prog for XP is 'Shelltoys XP' so you only have to right click to get command prompt and many other options.
