The judge probably just didn't know any better and considered his crimes to be not so serious. This was a pretty interesting article, what struck me was the context of blind freaks, way back in 71, esquire magazine published a piece called, "Secrets of the Little Blue Box," which is partialy about blue boxing but also has a wonderful storyline about blind phreaks.
