yes you can use normal (HTTP) proxies on IRC aswell as SOCKS 4&5, but most IRC servers will scan you to see if you are using a proxy and disconnect you if they find one.

The most common solution (not the only one) is to use a BNC or 'bouncer'. The most commonly used ones are PsyBNC (available for windows and *nix), MUH (*nix only afaik), and a POS called WinBNC. The last one runs on windows only and is very popular but in my opinion its a pile of shit, its unstable and insecure. PsyBNC seems to be the way the world is moving... google for more info.

if U have psybnc on linux there is a efnet server that makes the bnc ip in IPV6 so NoOne can identify that ;)
and the dDoS attack R over on your BNc :D

 there is a little trick to access an irc server if the server finds out you are running a proxy and puts you in a black list.first don't "throw" the proxy at the "recycle bin"!.access with your physical ip and type /links,that will give you the linked servers.disconnect and retry the proxy with all the servers you can see in links table(just double click them!).this trick works at many servers....and especially the greek servers!they forget to set an open proxy finder to their servers.some of them are very good protected and some others are liked to build up by a newbie!

why not just use proxy's on non standard ports ?

the most common ports are 80 81 8080 3128 1080 8000

if u use a proxy on a different port to those then you should have no probs

Well connecting irc with a socks5 proxy isn't a big deal, there is ALWAYS at least one server of the network that allow me to connect.

Check the .nl / .no serveurs
