I have heard many a time people say dont run a telnet server run ssh.
and have never really thought why not.
i think it has something to do with sniffing.
and that ssh encryts the text and telnet sends it plain.
but as i say im not sure.

how is telnet exploit able?
and am i correct in my osumption?

Peace

Um. Like you wrote.
Communications with a telnet server is done in plain text.
Communications with a ssh server is encrypted.

Telnet is more easy to exploit because you can intercept passwords send back and forth to the server, if you're able to sniff a network between the host and server.

telnet is not the only widely used protocol that exposes passwords. FTP and POP are two more protocols with the same problem. However, only telnet typically gives a cracker access to a login shell. If someone gets your POP password, they can read your email or forge email in your name. But, they're not likely to be able to compromise the mail server. However, with your telnet password, they can immediately log in and use the server to attack other computers and are more likely to be able to gain privileged use of the server.
