yesterday i had my first encounter with that.
i wanted to download the microsoft baseline security analizer. i didn't pass that mentioned test so i googled for the programm and found it mirrored on a swiss site.
the security analyzer then told me after the security test, that i was missing 18 updates and it gave me a list of them each with a download button.
so i just clicked on the download buttons and got all my updates without that test.
i guess i wont' have any problems with that in the future

they already implementing this way back the report date 2005jul26. microsoft site will scan at your choice (but now mandatory) before downloading tools/updates/docz from microsoft sites.

it may be true that checking version and product code will help them fight piracy... but the question still how much data are they collecting and where those data go?

erm as far as I know microsoft update will also provide office updates and updates for other microsoft products.. all in one place..
Many don't update office, this will they will.. and some do update it of course.. but then they need to go to another update site etc etc..
so see it as an all-in-one updater

Although slightly off topic, Microsoft might be losing their ground, even in the cellphone industry. Maybe this is a sign that the world is finally switching over to Linux? In just the past few days, a lot has happened...

h**p://linux.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/07/27/1551250&tid=126&tid=106
"Most of the major studios use Linux -- such as DreamWorks with more than 1,500 Linux desktops and 3,500 Linux servers. The MovieEditor Conference is an all-day event on computer-based filmmaking in downtown Los Angeles on August 3rd. Studio technology chiefs and other experts discuss ongoing work using Linux in feature animation and visual effects. Presented in collaboration with LinuxMovies.org."

Nokia ported Palm OS and tested it internally. Then Nokia dumped GEOS and switched to Symbian - based on EPOC from Psion. Now Nokia is already testing internally Series 60 and other platforms on Linux...

Financial Services Companies Lead the Charge to Linux
"The first big server project involved moving 100 schools from more than 100 aging Windows NT 4 boxes to fewer than 20 centrally managed IBM blade servers for Web, file-and-print, e-mail and directory services. The IT staff designed a test to pit Windows against Novell's (Nasdaq: NOVL) SuSE Linux. Linux won because the hardware performed better with it, and the cost was 30 percent less."

Although Microsoft's price-per-share is going back up, it is still at an all time low from it's steady decline to 23.82 in april (was 30.20 in nov). The value for Microsoft currently sits at roughly 25/share. I am personally excited to see if this new plan microsoft has will raise the company's value, or if the market will continue it's drive for Linux as it already has shown!

Very informative click, cheers...

Every OS has its place, I feel in about 2 maybe 3 years, I'll be switching my father over to the Linux platform.

"Your Dad cant use linux, he doesnt know anything about computers !"

True, thats why it'll work. He can use firefox and thunderbird + Open Office... He needs nothing more than disk drive access, and if worse comes to worse, I can setup a Terminal Services connection to my house if he needs it.

Microsoft, unless longhorn comes with pot's of gold, and you start recognising Linux as an operating system (Ie, atleast detecting the linux file systems instead of Unknown or Corrupt or Empty - and start not taking over the Master Boot Sector - etc etc), you will continue loosing market share and I will fight to the death for Linux over MS products (as deemed necessary, if M$ product is a better choice for that area - then so be it)

BTW, does anyone know how this Verification program works running on Windows 2000 ? Seems I've been getting mixed signals.. And even for VMWare machines ? (Yes ive googled and search the vmware site - but couldnt find what i wanted)

It was cracked 24 hours later. The Genuine Advantage restriction only applies to non-security updates, which are still available as long as you have it set to be automatically updated. To get by it, just go to Windows Update, and at the screen where you can either click "Custom" or "Express", enter:

javascript:void(window.g_sDisableWGACheck='all')

then hit Enter. Nothing noticable will happen, but it turns off the trigger to verify your computer. Then click custom and download all the ish you want.
