I am in school for system security, and the class i'm in right now has Hacking wars between mini lans in the room. We can use anything we want to gain any sort of access to another lan, and i need some ideas on what i should use. I've used whoppix a little bit, but it seems to be outdated. Plus I don't know that much about linux. I want to know what utilities people have used that they like. Thanx

I've always found that Knoppix-STD (Security Tools Distribution) does the trick.

I do enjoy Knoppix-std but it seems to lag behind in updates. Auditor seems to be a better choice right now as it is updated every couple of months.

I won't say a certain live CD, the best one is the one that you create yourself. Even knoppix has a lot of things which are missing. But for general purposes, knoppix is the best. Auditor is specialized for security.

IMHO, Auditor is the best.

But like belgther said, it would be much better if you create by yourself.

You will have the only and most updated packages and you could remove the garbage you dont need. I wrote a tutorial about it, its at the Linux part of this forum.

Good luck

The best 4 me is Whoppix.

Whoppix is a stand alone penetration testing live cd based on Knoppix. With the latest tools and exploits, it is a must for every penetration tester and security auditor. Whoppix includes Several exploit archives, such as Securityfocus, Packetstorm, SecurityForest and Milw0rm, as well as a wide variety of updated security tools. The new custom kernel also allows for better WIFI support, for tools such as Aireplay.

I think building your own is best, but if you don't, I'd go with auditor. I wrote a tut at http://www.governmen...14&#entry107014

my method of choice (because i have to run xp on my laptop for work) is to run a debian ssh server on my LAN and the pretty much any tool you need is just an apt-get away . but if you need tools on one of these other cd's just pull it from the disc on to the server. that way you have the best of all worlds

You can try Operator

It's based on knoppix and it's a debian distribution with many hacking - security tools added.

I don't know about the current version but i think it's updated enough for your job.

whoppix is the best live linux for pent. testers. how could whoppix be outdated???

you have all the tools you need, kernel wich is very stabile and secure...

u can customize the tools but from your question I doubt that you have enough skillz.
