I'm happy with my BlackICE and KAV, i have kav's Real-Time protection disabled. BlackICE is a great firewall because you can create your own firewall permision and it even has Application Protection.

I use hardware devices as my main defense, but as far as software, I have found that Kaspersky along with Mcafee AV and Firewall seem to get the job done. However, no AV/Firewall will secure you 100%.

Hardware first.

Kav and Sygate next.

You have to do a little tweaking to get them to play nice together but I'm a huge huge fan of Sygate's firewall. I was previously running norton corporate and I thought I'd try out Kav and see how I liked it and so far its doing alright.

Hardware defense is best. Specifically if you are running Psynapse CheckMate IPS Boxes. They use neural networks to constantly simulate new attacks on the network and learn to defend against them. They can use the data collected to notify the firewalls on the network as to whether or not to discontinue specific traffic. You can read more about checkmate IPS here:

I like astaro and pix for frontend, although, i have been known to use others, or build my own linux firewall/gateway. E-smith does okay also if configured correctly and add some additional functionality to it such as dsniff, snort, and maybe have guardian or some other software ips interacting with it. I had a version of snort/guardian running on it once and it did fairly well I think.

Other than that, for Windows I like ZoneAlarm for my firewall and AVG, and for Linux, I like good ol' iptables with snort/guardian and clamav. I also like kaspersky labs though.
