Hey there!
Maybe you guys can help me out.
I got an unix server running samba on it and I also got the root username and password.
The only problem is: I can not connect through ssh.
The port is open, but when I try to connect through putty the connection gets closed just after a second. So a ssh connection does not even get established.
Is there any chance that I can connect to ssh anyways?

sorry if it's a dumb question, just tried several things out and i'm running out of ideas now.

can you log in as a non root user, check your sshd_config file for this line: "PermitRootLogin yes" (assuming you are using openssh)
check /var/log/messages see if sshd is reporting anything

its generally not a good idea to allow remote root login (allow a non-root user then use su), but if its an unimportant box who cares

You can enable an option in Putty that it will not close the window even if the connection fails.
So it should return an error message which might help you.
But I also guess that your server doesn't allow remote root logins for security reasons.

well if it doesn't even start an ssh session i guess you ain't prompted to type in the username and password. Maybe you got the unknown remote hosts connection denied, check your sshd_conf file and check if you got anything that looks like connections_deny or something that may look like that... maybe is just that ur host isn't allowed to connect to the server.. check that out.

Also check to make sure your SSH server is running and that the host you are attempting to connect FROM isn't on a network whose firewall restricts outgoing connections to port 22.

Try telneting to the server on port 22 and see if you get an answer from open_ssh. Also you may want to check your hosts.allow and hosts.deny in /etc to make sure ssh isn't restricted to certain IP's.

you have to check the ssh protocol

this kind of bug seems to be a client outgoing ssh1 trying to connect to a ssh2 server

putty is pretty good for that bug ?

If it doens't even ask you for the username ( as the ssh session doesn't even start ) , maybe you should try configuring your Firewall or Router to see if there's something like DENY_ALL_CON = YES or something like that that is denying external connections throught port 22/tcp to your server...
