I was a bit bored today so i looked around for a new defiance.
In my network are running some gentoo machines.
A desktop machine - gentoo/xfree/fluxbox
Servers - file server/router/shoutcast/squid/etc

tell me about your favourite distros/apps/servers and so on...

Because WindowsXP on a 300mhz-500mhz PC is pretty sluggish. I have linux running on a Pentium1 133 as my home firewall.

This might be something you may be interested in. You can put it in a DMZ and see whats going on. Depending on where your at you may want to include a banner just for safety's sake.

HoneyD or you can try the Honey D Linux ToolKit. You may also want to look at Labrea Tar Pit

If your interested in playing with IDS, you may want to look at Prelude IDS

Just some ideas for you.

i want to feel free and want to decide which kernel etc

i forgot my sweet laptop gentoo/fluxbox/kismet and everything you need when you dont have access to the internet ;)

to monitor my boxes i use cacti ( http://www.cacti.net )

kuerby@freyja kuerby $ uname -a
Linux freyja 2.6.7-hardened-r17 #1 Sun Jan 2 06:48:02 GMT 2005 i686 GNU/Linux

gentoo all the way && hardened all the way ;D

Yes, i have too a openBSD box as a firewall with pf and pfstat. This mahine aims to protect and give internet connection to my others computers ( 1 linux box and windows xp <_< ... ) !

It's pretty secure i thing, better than windows and extremely configurable.

Moreover, this kind of box run on a computer not very powerfull ( 100 Mhz or more ).

It's so very cheaper and secure. However, with this kind of computer you cannot have a graphical interface :P !

I have installed too, a file system integrity : AIDE and a log checker : logcheck. I will try soon a honeypot, it's a good tools...

Screwing around on, learning the command interface, as an attack victim, attempting to load software before you load it on the "good" box.
