I recently purchased a home PC with XP Home Edition on it. I set myself to administrator, and everyone else as "Limited" so the kids wouldn't install junk with malware built into it. Unfortunately, now they cannot print to a USB printer, or play music from the CDROM. I searched google unsuccessfully to find a fix to this, other than making them administrators as well, but came up with no useable info. I tried everything I could with regards to "setting up the accounts", but unless they are listed as administrators, they cannot do those two things. Is there an answer, or do I have to buy/install XP Professional to enable user accts with designated privlidges? :unsure:

windows 2000/xp:
Everyone probably knows this but holding shift while right clicking a file will bring you the run as command in the context menu! This is good if you want to log in as a guest but then need to run an executable with admin rights!

If you create alot of batch files for distribution add the line

start (your webpage url)

just before the end of the script for abit of advertising?!?!

no sorry mate! other than the Run As command, :unsure:
if the specifc tasks they are performing can be done via the command you can make a batch script that will perform that task only with administrative priveliges
im sure someone will provide an example on how to do this!
i would but i dont want to lead u astray!!!

Not to familiar with home but here's a few general tips:

Give an account admin rights, configure/install everything then take away its permissions.

Try gradually reducing their group membership, like power users, then users etc. until you have an acceptable compromise.

As I remember Home doesn't have a local security policy snapin(or any snapins for that matter) but if you search around you can find reg hacks to implement alot of those options.

Also you may be able to use the old secedit tool for 9x boxes to apply security configs.

Yeah XP Home sucks.

Thanks for the tips. I just upgraded to XP pro, so that will fix most of the issues, but may try the reg hacks on my "test" home PC just to see if it would work. You guys rule B)

For Windows :

Windows key + E -> open explorer
Windows key + M -> Minimize All windows (<- this one is great)
Windows key + F -> open the "find" window
Windows key + L -> Locks the computer
Windows key + R -> opens the "Run" window
Windows key + D -> Desktop
Windows key + Tab -> switch between programs

and the ultra-secret-one-you-never-knew-about : Ctrl+Alt+Del -> Task Manager
