When I was setting up my first FreeBSD server I spent a lot of time trying to find info on how to config the server security wise, I was a little freaked out over what needed done in order to "secure" my server. But I didnt give up, after I while I found a great article on littlewhitedog.com called "How To Install a Secure BSD System".
I must be honest I was getting really sick of google by the time I had found it, but any way I started to read the article and I realized this IS what I needed! A nice article on what I needed to do which only expected you to have very basic (if any) knowledge of *nix.
At the start it is just general stuff about securing BSD and then it moves on more specific stuff about setting up a mail server, the mail server bit wasnt useful for me. But the rest defiantly was. It included stuff from closing ports that dont really need to be open to doing a full OS update (cvsup make buildworld etc) and making a custom kernel - something I wasnt going to do because google had really put me off.
Anyway I wont be pasting the whole text, mainly to stop the next guy quoting my whole post! So here is the link
http://www.littlewhi...content-72.html
It is in three parts, links to the next parts can be found at the bottom of the page :D

It is mostly geared at FreeBSD so you would need to know abit about other BSD distros before you could use the link that well? I haventused any other BSD distros so i am not sure how much use that article would be to you sorry :) give it a read and see what happens
Have fun
