depends on in what it was written for example there are decompilers for vB 3.0 and lots of others, if u just wan`t to change basic things you could have a look at resource hacker but thats probably not the thing u want, if its commandline its probably c or java and so on :) if u`re really good you could also disassemble it and do u`re changes there (w32dasm) well try to find out what it was written in and then search for the decompiler if u`re luckey there is one in case that won`t work then u should look for protection unpakcers like pe and so on :)

Get file inspector from www.fileinspector.cjb.net
Open ur program in file inspector and see compiler section . It willshow u with what packer it is packed . After that unpack it and reopen unpacked file and see the same section again . It will show which compiler was used to make it . Dunno how to get source code after that bcoz it depends on compiler :) .Hope it helps a bit ;)

my dissassembler of choice is pvdasm- hxxp://pvdasm.anticrack.de

usually dissassembler is like never enough, for that purpose there's debuggers to walk you through the source- such as SoftIce, OllyDbg, and W32Dasm (among many others)

id suggest something like ida pro, its highly flesable, and has many features that will help you along the way, in combinationation with a good debugger and w32dasm or something similar, you'll start to understand stuff with time,
