Foundstone Settles Piracy Charges

Foundstone, a provider of vulnerability assessment solutions and infosecurity training, settled software piracy charges brought by the Software and Information Industry Association (SIIA).

Under the agreement, Foundstone will pay a fine of three times the list price of the its unlicensed software. Foundstone says the fine is about 3 percent of the total software purchased by the company during the past three years. Foundstone declined to give an exact dollar amount of its fine.

Neither Foundstone nor SIIA is commenting on the extent of Foundstone's piracy. Prior to the settlement, SIIA said it had evidence that shows the copyright infringement to be "extensive." Foundstone disputed the allegations, saying it was 95 percent in compliance.

Foundstone says it's taken steps to remedy its licensing issues and, with the assistance of the SIIA, is developing programs to avoid relapses.

Kinda humorous that Foundstone closed all the back doors, but allowed others to bust thru their front doors with fines.

Of course, we all know that unregistered copies of commerical software are at every work location. In my experience, managment at some level knows about it, and they "will get to it soon". I don't think most are intentionally trying to bilk vendors, they just aren't intentionally taking the time to pony up (which is kinda the same thing, as the fines are the same).

I understand that almost every company has some pirated software on it's network. But, it is a flagrant violation when the company executive promote the use!

I'm proud to say, as the IT-Staff of Besam in Sweden during this summer, that we do not have any pirated software. (I know, saying none is extreme, because the clients can download stuff, even though I can monitor right about everything on their computers ;))
Atleast all the applications used at work, for work is licenced. Then if there is programs which isn't used for work, at work, is none of our concern, it's the clients responsibility to stick to the applications we provide them with.

Anyway, as I said, it's probably never 100% free of unlicenced software, atleast not on this company with over 300 employees only here in Sweden. (I support other scandinavian countrys aswell, Denmark, Germany etc. :))

Well, have a nice one lads. I'll go on about building my console-google-searcher :)
I'm creating a project in VB.NET which makes use of the Win2k/NT-based console to execute a query :) Kinda cool tool. I'll post it when I'm done.
