Expand.exe is one nice handy tool included with every windows installation

It expands compressed files. Specifically Windows .cab files. Similar to unzip.
By reading this board it looks like only a few of you have a knowledge about what expand can be used for.
Well, you ever wondered what those *.**_ files within the servicepack dirs are?
this files are the compressed equivalent to their original windows file. Most executables are included in the famous i386 or Servicepack folders.
This files can be easily expanded using expand.exe
i386 and servicepack dirs contain all compressed files of the installation routine.
so also the files most kids here like to delete (tftp.exe, ftp.exe, net.exe) are in this folders and only wait for someone to restore the executable.

the command to restore it is pretty simple:
expand c:\ftp.ex_ c:\
ren c:\ftp.ex_ ftp.exe

keep in mind not every windows installation backups it files.
Why writing this? well because I have seen many windows installations where scriptkids have put time into replacing tftp, ftp, net, debug, telnet with other files to protect from getting rehacked but never (!!) replaced the compressed equivalents.
you chance to turn their stupidy against them.

/edit
and for the kids here with their batch files coded by someone else using their speedtest files:
You know that speed.exe is a copy of ftp.exe? no you don't know
/edit2
Warning: since I know the nature of scriptkids you now think "O I'm l33t I delete expand.exe"
Do it and you will screw up every new installation the administrator tries to do

lol ye i wondered when some1 was going to tell them about speed.exe laugh.gif

about expand.exe, ye i knew that smile.gif works very good ! But ofcourse the installation files need to be on the remote pc ofcourse.

good points here you've brought this to our attention, Killaloop. yeah, deleting files is not the way to secure a server. expand.exe is a tool included in every windows. it's nice that you've made it clear to scriptkids.

thx for reply and good to see that you got my point.
have seen requesting many for another upload method but still quite a lot don't know many fakts about windows and its files. so I thought just write this little basic information.
and another edit:
if you find someone without any way to upload but he got windows cd in his drive (like I have 24/7...but will remove it now I think) you can restore all your needed files be decompressing the cab files (if you know in what cab your files are).
so all this was written because of: why causing much attention with xml, html scripts when you already own the key to do what you want.
feel free to reply, also for those who I might have offended because calling them scriptkids by not knowing this little things. you all are here to learn

like 90% of the time they also forget to delete the backups in
c:\WINNT\ServicePackFiles\i386

or just rename ftp.exe to something xxxftp.exe or ftp.bak
