there could be probs such as if no backup was made at the sp4 installation

this is a method for sp1, it could be similar for sp4, check if you have the sp4 backup dir:

remember, check that you are in the right folder, i dont have win2k i just googled this ok

To uninstall Service Pack 1 from the command prompt

From the Start menu, click Run.
In the Open box, type cmd, and then click OK.
Change the folder to \%systemroot%\$NtServicePackUninstall$\spuninst\.
Type Spuninst.exe, and then press Enter.
To close the Command Prompt window, type Exit.

When u install SP4, you will get an option "ARCHIVE" , Well, If you select this, You will be able to uninstall it with out any problem.... Otherwise, you will have to spend a little time my friend.... I never did it, Microsoft says, you will not be able to uninstall it once if you selected "DO NOT ARCHIVE" option while installing. The older version files will be replaced and can't be restored unless you select "ARCHIVE" option. Take care next time.
