Hi! I'm just wondering, is there any good AV software for free somewhere? I'm sick of all the warez'ing these days, and since I'm about to be a programmer I intend to keep my line straight, and as a student I can't affort anything but a free AV scanner Any suggestions ?
AntiVir www.free-av.com works fine for me. All the time up to date.

I love AVG, it works great and is a really proffesional product. Whenever I boot up into windows I always have AVG and Sygate Personal Firewall running. They are two of the best free products for windows.
Alternatively just load Linux and dont worry about it

packet, you're not saying that linux with AV is okay, are you?
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
Yes, it's better than Windows without AV by far, but do you really feel that safe? Just cuz hardly no-body does it doesn't mean that that's the best way to go?
I'm gonna fire up my oliver wendell douglas flute unless you recant! Or at least you could hem and gnaw a little.
Below is a graphic of packet on Linux without AV (add to your portfolio, pack) :

Ok, two things:
First: where is the graphic?
Second: Nope, I won't recant! There are not very many virusii for linux and I'm protected at just about all my gateways to infection. Although I gues you could send me a tar.gz and I could unzip it and install it, but that's not too likely. MOST linux users don't run virus control for that matter. (although there is a free one for linux from F-prot) I have been running LInux for 5 years now and never ever had a problem with virusii.

Oh packet, my friend, my friend (someone hand me a rusty chain)...
Packet, there ain't no graphic. That's the point. Eventually, your linux will just be "nux".

I agree that there are NOT many Linux/*nix virusii and most Linux users don't run AV (most *nix don't). I hope to send you a tar.gz soon. Or just click here.
If your "gateways to infection" means network gateways (and even if it doesn't), one fundamental rule of security is layer, layer, layer (similar to the fundamental rule of chocolate). By not running AV on yur box, you're missing the dark chocolate layer, and everyone knows that milk chocolate, while not as tasty, offers poor AV and dieter protection!
And if you read my entire post carefully (err, packet by packet), you will see that you've been had!!!!

Hey thats not a QUOTE!!! I didn't say I should recant, I just said I wont!!!! Grr
I'll just say virusii are not a problem on linux/unix. They never have been and probably wont ever be. Linux rocks!!! No mail woms here! No blaster here! No macro virusii here!
We will.. we will... Linux you! !
Whoo hoo!!!!

OK, they problably will be a problem some day once everyone starts using Linux.
