Well some time we need Linux for Hacking. For those guys don't like to install a Linux on their system (just like me) I recommend a Linux called KNOPPIX-std. It's Bootable and doesn't need to insatll. it has GUI and most of hacking tools. there are some other Bootable Linux too such as PlanBe But I didn't test them. It worse to try one of them

Thank you. I'm tired of installing linux, because of some reason I always fall back to win. Maybe that's 'cause I'm a gamer Anyway, I'm gonna try this one! thank you mate!

If gcc is in it, it's normally no problem to compile.
just type gcc -o exploit exploit.c

Yeah Knoppix is cool I got it too for like a few months.. but loading is slow.. so if you have much MBRam I would recommend using VMware which can run OS'es under for example when you are in windows.. so you can be in WinXP and Linux @ the same time.. handy if you want to run a server with SQL in Windows and FTP in Linux {a stupid example} or just to test a new OS... Naa cygwin blows. It is so slow compared to a real unix distro. Stop kidding yourself, trying to keep using windows like you have to or something. Dump the winblowz box or at the very least use live cd like knoppix-std. This latest knoppix-std version is my favorite. It uses less memory than the last one. It has the most toolz out of any other "security" live cd. It is also build around the openmosix kernel, which allows you to build a cluster(read:supercomputer).
peace out.

Knoppix rulez. I have been trying it for a few weeks now and am completely satisfied. If you have hardware probs with Knoppix you might want to check Kanotix, which is based on Knoppix but offers extended hardware support and some other goodies.

Knoppix is good but if you really want to learn how it all works load up a *nix. Its not hard it just takes time and changing your mind set from the windows world. load linux, take the blue pill phase

Knoppix is a good solution and so is cygwin. But I prefer VMware GSX + a linux distro. I find Slackware under VMware GSX works fantastic. But thats just me.

For yall that are aginst Knoppix-std, what do you think the advantages of linux are that is installed (besides speed). I think for anyone that isnt a l33t h4x0r and wants to be, its a great place to start. I mean it provides the tools for EVERYTHING and the first step to becoming a hack is nowing these tools exist... For all of you that have installed linux to your comp, (besides Manadrake and Knoppix(yes its installable) know its a real pain. If you want to be a hacker (lol why do we even use this word im using security pro. from now on) start with Knoppix-std, once you learn to use those tools go get "Manadrake" it has the easiest install and get to hack/crack/phreaking with your new found skills! I use good old Red Hat Linux myself and VMware is way better then cygwin! I believe Windows is needed, Cause well Unreal Championship doesnt come on linux nor does it run good in Wine!

stop dissing this... what about people that don't even have a harddrive (i'm gonna use it for a test computer with no harddrive).. ALSO, what about if you don't have access to linux and only windows? put this in and you get linux!!!!
I did get a problem though, it gets all the way to login, and then in a few milliseconds i get error messages and my moniter dies... uhh....

Can i point out that you peopel all seem to be on about hacking, in the sence that linux is the best for doing this job! False, use a BBC!!! But why don't you just install linux and windows and choose at boot? instead of loading up again and again when you want to use linux? plus you don't get the draw back with the lack of speed. chars then.

The primary partition is NTFS, 40 gig drive, 30 gig filled with programs and projects.
The drive can be repartitioned 20 gig each make one fat32, but the backed up files won't fit (I keep at least five gigs free space, for safety), have to sacrafice quite a few things.
Well, you argue buy a new computer, little money. Build a computer (Laptops are a bit harder to build).
Another argument just start from scratch.
I have been modifying and playing with the windows kernal and other pieces of windows in assembly for awhile. Got a customized windows, took some work. It would be sort of losing that work. Can be backed up but need to somehow delete 15 gig of stuff I use regularly.
Yet another argument, buy another hard drive. Switch hard drive when you need to switch between them.
This costs money, and the switching isn't fast.
A use other than personal:
Say you need to boot another system up under a different operating system for whatever reasons. Diagnostics, virus removal. Linux ignores the permissions windows puts on things.

I think what needs to be mentioned here is what is one persons favorite could be another persons poison. The various distro's out there each have a following. What ever floats their boat and works for that person, is what there going to use. Wether it be Windows-Linux-Unix Everyone has there own opinion and if we were all alike well the world would be a boring place indeed. One thing I find cool about PHLAK is the background pics, and even Tux with an army helmet! You see, thats all we need to make M$ hide behind their safes! Bring in the PHLAK, decorated with nukes, mushroom clouds, and Tux in fatigues with an army helmet packin' some heat! lol, thanks for the tip on Knoppix! Dave

Ive had a very little experince with Linux before and know very little about this OS, but after I tried Knoppix-STD I feel like I should have tried it before - its really good.
I wanted to try PHLAK also, but the homepage is down and I couldnt find where to download the image of PHLAK CD. Anyone has the same problem or could anyone help me, please? I cant find it on the internet - all sites link to homepage, but as I said its down for some reason.
