I tried close it, but did not work, then I tried to disable it in
Administrative Tools -> Services -> DNS Client
But still, it did not work, is there any way around?
Thanks.

Full Version: 100% Cpu Usage?
Hi, I am having some problems with my Windows 2000 Prof. box. Every 4-5 minut, the CPU reaches 100% on - I think it's "Services.exe"
I tried close it, but did not work, then I tried to disable it in Administrative Tools -> Services -> DNS Client But still, it did not work, is there any way around? Thanks. Regards, LS
What do you mean you think it is it? Check in task manager so you are sure.
Well.. it freezes for about 20 secs, and then it's normal again for a few minuts, I've seen the services.exe reach 100% only once, so I think it's it.
Is it possible that this Microsoft Article might be referring to that problem?
I had the exact problem with my old win 2000 server and after I had installed the actual service pack (No. 4) everything ran fine again. Maybe you should try to install the newest (unless you already did that).
I used to have the same problem updated to sp4 and it went away. Good Luck : ).
THe wierd thing is I already have SP4 installed, and WindowsUpdate dosent say anything about new updates?
Have you tried booting into Safe Mode? And if you can, does the problem persist then? If not, then there may be an application that's running in the background causing problems or potential hardware issues. Off hand, I'd suggest starting to eliminate items so that it's easier to find the problem and a solution.
And did this problem start recently? Perhaps after installing something or upgrading something?
well, you cannot end this process or you will screw up your machine. This is the Services Control Manager and its responsible for starting, stopping, and interacting with system services.
If all the microsoft tips don't do the trick you might take a look at other running services. it looks like one of your services tries to startup and produces some error causing services.exe to freeze for a few seconds. this may relate to a missing service file or to a not proper configured service. Have you resently installed any software? I would install Dameware NT utilities to take a look at the installed services. it gives a better overfew as other commandline tools do. hope it helps
Hmmm i'm not sure about this but i think i had the same prb... and it ended being some nasty virus. If i can remember well i booted up in safe mode and then search registry for something suspicious(don't remember the name of the file though) and after i find it i cleaned my reg and delete from my hd... As i said in the beggining i'm not quite sure about this....
yeah i have the same problems with winxp sp1, but it seems to be a hardware problem. i bought some cheap ide hdds (samsung) and they're obviously crap.. i can't copy anything on that drives ... i have the same symptoms with cpu-usage of 100% for some minutes.
could it be a hardware problem?
i have the same problem with services.exe going to 100%, im on Win2k with SP3 but I run Windows Update a lot to keep updated, maybe I should not use windows update and jut wait for the latest service packs?
this only happened to me once (i left it on for like a week with me not using it [my computer])... then with a restart it [services @ 100] went away..
it got to 100% because i tried starting things (and ram/CPU/other(?) weren't ready i guess....) don't know, just don't know
Can you please check the spelling of SERVICES.EXE?.. Is it correct?.. Do you have an AV installed in your PC?.. Could you boot in Safe mode and ran AV?.. Are you sure that your HDD is new and working properly? It can be thousand things. What ever, go step by step, try to figure out the issue... Please try one more thing, Uninstall SP4 and reinstall it again...
Could you find anything wrong in Event viewer?.. Hope that you can fix it soon. Manu
Found something in the event viewer:
Name: DNScache Type: Warning! "The DNS Client service could not contact any DNS servers for a repeated number of attempts. For the next 30 seconds the DNS Client service will not use the network to avoid further network performance problems. It will resume its normal behavior after that. If this problem persists, verify your TCP/IP configuration, specifically check that you have a preferred (and possibly an alternate) DNS server configured. If the problem continues, verify network conditions to these DNS servers or contact your network administrator. "
...but it's 12 days old.. And it has not been repeated since. Wierd
