Full Version: Solaris Help

All,

In need of some help. Just found out I am going to Korea for a year. I also just found out that I am going to be working windows 2k and Solaris 2.5.1. The windows 2K I have covered, but I need to learn some solaris before I go. I know it is a UNIX operating system, and it runs on Sun platforms. What linux version would be most similar to Solaris, since I really dont have a wealth of unix experience? I have also heard that there is an Intel platform for Solaris, and have not really looked into that as of yet. Would something mostly CLI help out? Any and all help appreciated to get me started.. smile.gif

That sucks, If you need anything just ask (mow your lawn ect.) As far as a Linux distro closer to Unix?? Why not just use BSD, (close to Unix because it is Unix :-))

As far as CLI or GUI, I would stick with CLI because it seams thats all the mil loads on there SUN boxs, (Sun has chosen GNOME as their default desktop though)

Also almost all of your Linux commands will work with Unix (basic Ones that is) one other tip, get to know how to use VI. If there is no GUI your going to need it. I'll look around for a list of common Unix commands.

Muahhaaahhaa...mow my lawn. Seriously, thanks for the offer as it is appreciated. wink.gif But I am leaving. You probably already know why as you have been down that road before.. sickening how one individual can be such a pain in the arse.. mad.gif

I am looking at getting a job at the NOSC when I get back. Also looking at moving to where it is warm year round, AZ, NV, FL come to mind. Got to feed my golf hunger ya know.

New job will be quite different, I only support a couple hundred users as compared to many times that. Emailed my sponsor, sounds like a decent job, at least I can almost finish school while there. Not getting involved in the whole party scene though, that could be bad.. blink.gif

Thanks for looking for me though

Have you ever used slackware?? going to go get BSD.

When you coming by?

Doesn't sound to bad, you should at least have an easier job. If you need any help just ask, and if you need any computer related stuff while your down their just ask.

I'll try to come down pretty soon, I want to say hello to you guys and also pay you know who for some work he did for me smile.gif

Well, actually after the migration, I had a job up there. The AMC Comm group commander gave me and 2 other people coins from him. That was cool. He had also stated that any one of us 3 who wants a job up there, go ahead.

Well, so i go to apply, and that "individual" says no, due to the lack of skill levels that we have, try again in 6 months. well, the day..and i mean the freaking day i was going to try again, i get called into mumbles' office..hey you have an assignment..

Oh well, I just gotta make the best of it while I am over there. Take advantage of the school opportunity, and learn as much as I can..ya know.

I want that NOSC job, I have a contact there who keeps mentioning me, he said let him know when it gets close to me leaving, he will hook me up..hope he can..

i finally got my site up, it looks decent..email me and I will give you the addy. I haven't paid for a domain name yet..so i dont really want to announce it here..even though anyone could find out anyway

they do have solaris for the intel platform, but its only certain version so it may be a litle different then the box you will be working on in the future. BSD is supposedly a great os, everyone who tryes it (succesfully) seems to be in love with the thing.

Best of luck and i hope things work out for you cool.gif
