Open BSD 3.4 OS

Only one remote hole in the default install, in more than 7 years!

The OpenBSD project produces a FREE, multi-platform 4.4BSD-based UNIX-like operating system. Our efforts emphasize portability, standardization, correctness, proactive security and integrated cryptography. OpenBSD supports binary emulation of most programs from SVR4 (Solaris), FreeBSD, Linux, BSD/OS, SunOS and HP-UX.

OpenBSD is freely available from our FTP sites, and also available in an inexpensive 3-CD set. The current release is OpenBSD 3.4 which started shipping Nov 1, 2003. The CDs (and Shirts) can be ordered...

OpenBSD is developed by volunteers. The project funds development and releases by selling CDs and T-shirts, as well as receiving donations. Organizations and individuals donate and thus ensure that OpenBSD will continue to exist, and will remain free for everyone to use and reuse as they see fit.

or so theo claims...

yeah, well: default install...wich means no apache, samba, etc...when it comes to some extras OpenBSD is as vulnerable as anything else...

thinking of some discussions about the exploitability of bugs in OpenBSD, remembering the words "this is not exploitable"... i just got the answer "not exploitable by you, theo"...

just look for something like apache chunked/OpenBSD, OpenSSH/OpenBSD, and so on...

The joys of the *BSD os's is that they install the same software as linux, but they have the added security of being customized exactly to each box they are installed onto via the 'ports' collection. Ports own other things such as RPM becasue they still build from the source but are then customized by the ports install scripts. you have to fight a port script to be able to install it in a less secure manner. Also, there are many more people working on patches for the *BSD systems because they are completely opensource and funded by more Universities (from gov't) than any other flavor of linux. Keeping up to date with the latest patches is simple too. Its just a few commands to download the latest source for the kernel and install it. Upgrading the ports (the programs that get exploited) is only 2 commands and that keeps you up-to-date with the security patches for every program.

PS Just too see how bad Windows is... look here to see how crappy it is at handling a simple XServer .. 190 MB memory

it's xserver running on win2k, yuk!... Anyone that runs nix* should know what xserver is. X uses about 80mb ram on my shweet Gentoo, weehee.

And next time you post something try to make complete sentances. you are very hard to understand.

Personally I prefer FreeBSD (5.1 RELEASE with Gnome 2.2 if you want to use X) over any Linux distro including SUSE now, bring on the power. This is all on a sub 600Mhz super socket-7 machine /w 256Mb ram (nup, didn't wanna compile Gentoo on this - and needed to for RAID card support - but I would give it a try later).

If you have issues with Linux, or are considering Linux, or want to try something new then go FreeBSD! I find X way faster on BSD too, anyone else find this? Only 2cds too, don't bloat the distro! pkg_add -r package, mmm.
