-Hi I am back with another newbish question, so if you hate noobs ... bye. For the rest of you tolerant wise men ( and women) here is my question.
-I just got ethereal(Windows port). As soon as I got it I went to capture | start and it began to capture my packets, so I know it works right.
-What I want to know is how to sniff other people's packets?? Do you have to be in a network already>>??
-And if so , I have a networked system at my home, how would I sniff the other computers in my network>>??

Yes, provided your network is connected together through hubs, and not switches.

If your network is switched, then you're going to need to download some "ARP poison" programs, quite a few have already been uploaded to the board. After you've got the ARP stuff working Etheral will quite happily work on top smile.gif

Enjoy.
(I posted a program a while back called: "websnurf", have a read up on it - see if you like it [futher note, I didn't make it!])

As agamemmon said, you can use ARP Poisoning if you're usin switches.
Cain and Abel is a very very good tool for this.
I "sniffed" my teachers hotmailpassword tongue.gif
Ofcourse I told him about it and he changed it and has never logged onto anything via the net in school since tongue.gif

But as I said, Cain and Abel is the exact tool you need.
www.oxid.it or check in the files section.

Ettercap is made for switched networks. It is simple to use and the only thing you need. I dont know if there is still a win port, but if there is, its only the source so you have to compile it yourself.

For more on ARP posioning, spoofing and sniffing, I posted a paper on those subjects that might help.
