Full Version: Lan Switch Problem

Hi,

I am having a hardware type problem in my Lan. My network cable is connected to a switch in my neighbours house . Of and on the switch gets hanged nearly every day and my Lan (yellow Light stops blinking then) and on my Lan i become the only alive host.... sad.gif
Note:- The Switch Supports 10/100 Mbps Transfer Speed.

I want to ask:-
1. What is this Problem ?
2. What is the reason behind that?
3. What is the solution?
4.Is it possible to remotely solve it without bearing the trouble of going and informing the neigbours to reset the switch?

I also have same problem when i put one of my HUB (D-LINK)... but it is the problem of Device (HUB) as far as i experienced... whenever i replace that HUB with anyother HUB or switch problem get solved... no disconnection (on/off)...

Maybe the utp cable to you neighbour is to long. 100 meter ?
Or do an cable test on the cable with a cable tester.

Perhaps your neighbour have a DLINK hub/switch. Once i bought a dlink switch (dwl-624+). I got more problem when connected by wire than wireless. Lots of friends of mine experienced problems you got.
In case you use a dlink, replace it with any other brand. Should work better

when the switch "hangs" does it kill all activity? ie your neighbour's as well as yours?

Ok first things first, you need to check the length of the cable from your place to the switch, if its exceeding 100m then attenuation might be taking place. Also check if the cable passes through resistance zones like electric generators, magnetic fields etc.

If that was not the problem then check if its only your system that causes problems. Many people face the same problem you are facing but there is nothing to worry about. If his system is connected and running with the same switch and yours is not then you know that it is either the cable length or the area is passes through is causing this problem.

Another thing that could have caused this problem is the switch might be on the other side of the firewall on that network which disables you on suspicion of intrusion. Check to make sure that you have added yourself in the trusted zone of the firewall (if this is the case).

I would suggest the switch being changed. Doesnt matter if you take the similar brand but i would suggest you go for LINKSYS. Most home users work on LINKSYS and it works absolutely smooth.

Another suggestion would be that you setup a wireless network. And no, remotely fixing the problem you are having is not possible, as you will have to reset your switch physically when facing the problem.

Still Did Not Find A Suitable Reason For My Problem because all the reasons which you have discussed here are not in the case of my problem.Not oNly me but also all other users using that swtich are facing the consequences.However Thankx For Your Replies

some devices can be resetted by connecting the + and - at the power in together (no not the 220V biggrin.gif ). take the switch of the power adapter and use a paperclip to connect + and - in together for about 5 seconds then start it up again

I 'revived' my trust televiewer that way once.

really? nothing that i thoughT of worked? whatelse can it be then? definitely the thought goes for the h/w device.

If all the users on the switch have the same problem and rebooting the switch fixes it. You probably have a crappy/buggy/broken switch. Replace it.

I had the same problem with a Netgear, replaced it with another one and presto-blammo no more problems.
