Hello,
I have been using McAfee Virus Scan Enterprise 8.0.0 for years, maybe not 8.0 but McAfee Enterprise for years. However, it doesn't detect everything it should, a lot of files aren't detected by McAfee but are to other products.

I hate the McAfee retail versions of Virus Scan as it's stuffed with junk you will never need, it's slow, and I hate the big security/monitoring center.

All I want is an antivirus, no spam control, security center etc... something that has an auto-protect, constant updates, fast, and stable.

I have looked at Kaspersky because it seems to detect just about every virus out there, which I want. Is it fast etc...? But in a way I do not want to use Kaspersky because it isn't as popular as other antivirus systems, and when I think like that I think it isn't as good.

I would use Norton because it's great in that sense, however it is slow and a resource hog and I have a slow computer.

Thanks.
G777
well Kaspersky is famous for being a bit of a resource hog but it is the most lethal av there is atm, not much gets past it
i wouldnt use anything else smile.gif
satknis
Kaspersky
f-secure
and g-data are the best av at the moment.

norton av is bullshit-> bad detection, resource killer etc...

do you just use software that is famous? then i think you can't keep windows safe.
Vort3x
By all means my system is very secure without a doubt. I have an excellent firewall, and a virus scanner doesn't really mean that much. Just because I had suspicions about kaspersky because I don't know much about it and not too many users use it, does not mean I have a bad sense of security. Sure a virus scanner is important in a way, but not the most important in the security of your system. It wouldn't be hard to have a secure system without a virus scanner even. But of course it's not that smart.

All I asked is to what AVs you would suggest, I don't need any other criticism thanks. How bad of resource hog is Kaspersky?
thesource
Mabye setup an extra computer for all your security?(firewall, av, ids, etc.)
Partizaan
Kaspersky + Pestpatrol (<- good for hacktools)

Nah NOD32 every single time, updates the second one is released, with just a simple message box telling you its updated, no f*cking around ... It catches just as much if not more than kaspersky and has some novel features.
Vort3x
Hmm it's a hard choice. I don't know if I want kaspersky or NOD32. Because I heard great things about both. Chris, what are these 'novel' features?
saetji
IF you think liek that you will go nuts. Most people dont know about kaspersky because of advertising. Companies like AOL and stuff make so many contracts with these "popular" AV companies (nortons, mcafee etc.) so you are sort of subconciously forced into them.

Fsecure is good but its engine still lacks some capabilities - kaspersky is better, so go kaspersky - dont feel silly about it because other people aren't using it.
Terminal
YAh norton mcafee sucks really . Go for KAspersky or NOd32 both are good . I prefer nod if u have lil slow pc unsure.gif
Vort3x
Yes NOD32 might just be my choice since it's not a resource hog and it's very good itself.

But I want Kaspersky too haha.

I need to have some sort of statistic as to which is better with resources, and which is better with virus detection/removal.
tikbalang
SOPHOS

we're using it for years. renewed for another 2 years.

we're using before that TRENDS and MC AFFEE too, but not happy with them.
B3T4
I used KAV for quite some time, but then i found NOD32 and been using that one sonce then. Its just faster and works, well atleast just as good.
AdmiralB
yes kav is great
so is dr web and some others
but on the whole kav is best

Some bits from the NOD feature list, personally I really like the on demand scanner that they have built in:

QUOTE
Key Features Include

Centralized management of the resident antivirus modules and filters.
Intuitive directory tree style system for easy access to:
Automatic, internet/LAN Update module
Centralized system of log files for all installed modules
AMON - resident on-access monitor
NOD32 - on-demand scanner
IMON - Internet monitor - scans e-mails incoming via the POP3 protocol
EMON - complementary e-mail scanner module - scans e-mails incoming via MAPI interface (details below)
Flexible task scheduler and planning module
Quarantine directory
Key system information

And the update system is hassle free and updates quickly and quietely but still gives your system the protection it needs.

Recovery of the most important system areas (functions) in the event of an infection.
Storage of infected files in a safe format (not allowing execution) into the quarantine.
Search speed is maximized through associative, multilevel cache and low-level code optimizations.
Use of very fast single-point samples and CRCs for precise detection.
Use of very few system resources.
Disinfection/quarantining of the files automatically, on-the-fly.
Full support of UNICODE in Windows NT / 2000 / 2003 / XP.

All of the computers I own are running NOD32 and Im really happy with it, I tried KAV but it was a resource hog and the updates werent as clean and quick.

sophos is pretty decent, and doesnt use up too much resources.
belgther
i use sophos and drweb... sophos is easy to update, and drweb can find much more... mcafee and norton used to be good, but now they offer nothing more than an interface that consumes the memory, the found viruses can't be cured...
JaG
NOD32 is great, very fast, detects alot of stuff norton/mcafee cannot, doesnt take up alot of resources and its under 10mb smile.gif
chris105
The only people not recommentding NOD seem to be people that havnt used it!! Seriously guys, give it a shot, the trial version is a small file and I can almost guarantee you will love it! And the virus detected window looks cool lol smile.gif
Dr.Death
kaspersky is the best. rolleyes.gif
chris105
D.r Death not only is that not adding the topic of conversation as kaspersky has already been suggested but you dont give any reasons whatsoever for your decision, have you even tried NOD?!?! How was kaspersky better if you did, did it detect more? Scan faster? Update quicker? Please give some reasons not just empty claims ...
mrBob
hmm
this topic is pretty interesting
for a year i've been using KAV
i disabled automatic full system scan right from the beginning cuz it uses waaaaaay too many resources then
but lately i also got auto-protect disabled for the same reason
so then having an AV is pretty useless dry.gif

i guess i'm gonna try NOD32 if it solves this problem biggrin.gif
Terminal
YAh man Nod32 is best if u consider resources .. IT takes abt 13-14 mb ram here . WIth internet monitor, Document Monitor, and auto protect ... And its fastest in scanning mass no. of files .. Updates are also small abt 2-2.5 mb mostly . And detction rate also better
manu
Kav and Nod32 , both rocks ... smile.gif Better you experiance the difference of these AVs with other Norton/MaCafee yourself, download a trail version and just scan your PC or well, you will be surprised that you are still infected with something which Norton doesnt see. tongue.gif

/me loves KAV. I first used Norton but thats just a little prick. Detects nothing, and if it finally detect something it can't be fixed huh.gif

Only thing I don't like of KAV is the speed of a full system scan. Takes ages smile.gif

But it detects a lot!
matiano
For all people...

OK Kaspersky (KAV) is good (i use it too) but its very easy to avoid the static signature-based unpacking engine (with code-permutation, OEP manipulation,or simple NOP Method)

My favorite AV-Scanner against all favorites undetected methods is Ewido (it uses a generic unpacking engine which are flexible enough to ignore the code-permutation).

----> see here !

the file is only 2299 KB big and rocks more then other !!!

When nobody beleave, download it, try to modify your file(server) and Ewido still detected it!

The only thing is that the unpacking engine has not fast updates (by new packers and crypters) same KAV, because they have not much people same KAV for updates her engine.

KAV and Ewido as secondary scanner are together my best protection !

Matiano
markymoo
kaspersky is the best, has the biggest unpacking engine bar none, the downside its a system hog and slow scan so you need a fast pc preferably over 2.4ghz and 512mb ram if you havent then use nod32.

nod32 is a close second but only if you turn on advanced hereustics and detect packers, it will detect unknown viruses if there modified more than any a-v except for kaspersky
the plus side is it uses less cpu resources and fast scan.

norton sucks slows you pc down to a crawl and too many go undetected

so as matiano says also use Ewido it will work alongside your a-v
Dr.Death
chris105, for us as a hackers, we test our encrypted trojans and viruses with most AV's and kasper always detect em.

also the new versions of kasper is realy fast and lite.

compare between AV's, by testing encrypted trojans and new worms:
http://www.virustotal.com/flash/index_en.html
http://virusscan.jotti.org/

try by your self, if you have for example norton, uninstall it and install kasper, see the result of the scan.

kasper is the best man. cool.gif
METAHUMAN
Kaspersky all the way. I've been using the 4.xx versions for about 3 years now. No Problems forund yet. I also tried out BitDefender Professional 8. Good for quick updates. Though, the place, I work has Trend Micro Enterprise edition. A good thing. Lowest on system resources. But I still prefer KAV. Try it out. Some good keyfiles are available on the net if you must find'em.
Regards,
Max!

Wow! I decided to try NOD 32. It's fast! And uses no memory at all! I really like it, I haven't really had a chance to see it in action with detecting things yet, but I will test it some more. Thanks for the suggestion Chris and others. Great AV!

Now all I need is a just as good firewall that doesn't use any resources or degrade internet speed rolleyes.gif . Norton sucks...

btw chris i was playing round with hxdef the other day, it was detected by nod32 but after running plain old upx on it and editing the headers which took less than 30 secs it was undetected
just so you know kav kicked its ass every time tongue.gif

i have tried nod32 before and i was quite impressed by how easy is it on resources but after this i just wouldn`t trust it 100%
