i`m looking for a tool encrypting the whole filesystem like "securstar drivecrypt" but if possible read- and writeable by both, linux (or bsd) and win32 systems also if possible nothing with a government related (or other) backdoor (like with strong encryptions from US) and with a good almost unbreakable crypto ( if it takes a few years thats ok, too tongue.gif) ....i haven`t found anything like this but if any1 knows somethin plz tell me smile.gif best of course would be open source ^^
thanx a biig lot in advance

This may be what you were looking for.

A BestCrypt volume is accessible as a regular filesystem on a correspondent mount point. The data stored on a BestCrypt volume is stored in the container file. A container is a regular file or block device, so it is possible to backup, move, or copy it to other disk (CD-ROM or network, for instance) and continue to access encrypted data using BestCrypt. BestCrypt supports the following encryption algorithms: GOST in Cipher Feedback mode and BLOWFISH, DES, TWOFISH in Cipher Block Chaining mode. A container can be formatted for any filesystem supported by Linux (MINIX, EXT, EXT2, FAT, FAT32, and others) and mounted as an additional volume to any mount point.

*Win32 and linux support

I would imagine one could store a whole filesystem in one ore more of the containers, though I haven't experimented with this product.

Doesn't look like it's open source.

Supports both linux and windows, encrypts the entire drive. Doesn't create containers like the others. Also does preboot encryption, so you have to enter a password to decrypt the drive, before you enter a password to login to windows. Oh, and its free.

If you only want containers, or part of the filesystem (just to encrypt certain data) I would recommend PGPDisk. It is free also. Use's a public/private key pair, so best practice is to keep the key on a USB jumpdrive or so, which is encrypted with symmetric encryption.

EDIT: I should add that I found it easier to get PGPDisk to work with GnuPG then with PGP.

thanx a lot both of u! bestcrypt wouldn`t work cause u can`t just boot a container and they have limited size. the other one looks intresting , i`ll have to have a closer look at that....any other possibilites are still welcome tongue.gif

Encryption Plus Hard Disk
