Win XP Professional (Da bomb. Very fast, stable, good looking. Boots in 24 secs on a P4 1.7Ghz, 512MB RAM)
Damn you beat me by 100 mhz!!!!
And yeah running windows xp for the past year or so crashed maybe 5 times tops?
I'd say Windows XP. Win2k is great too stable and fast as well... (and both of them are more secure using NTFS!!!)

I've used the following O.S's Win 3.1 (I liked it cause it had the MAC touch in it) Win 95 (Don't remember having any problems with it) Win 98 (A sad version of M$) Win 98SE (A good version for low end systems) WinME (A problem child) Win 2000 Professional (Pretty stable, healthy babe) Win XP Professional (Da bomb. Very fast, stable, good looking. Boots in 24 secs on a P4 1.7Ghz, 512MB RAM)
So 'my' final verdict is that WinXP is the better O.S of the above mentioned. Waiting to get me hands on RedHat 9.0

Just dont go near Win ME!!!
As Digger said, it is indeed a problem child...only problem being, the more you punish it, the more it crashes!!!

OK, win2k or XP if you HAVE to but otherwise download Debian or Gentoo and go to town on Xwindows.

windows to linux is sometimes a big deal for some people, because you have to worry about whether all your softwares support linux or not. But if you just wanna try a new OS (for fun), maybe you could try "Virtual Machine Software" first: http://www.vmware.com/ :-)

Another option for experimenting with another OS apart from windows is to get your hands on a Live CD distro. As it runs from CD, its a lot slower than if you installed it, and its read only, but its great for trying out a Linux distro before you take the plunge and start partitioning etc.
You can get them free with Linux Format magazines or other Linux dedicated magazines.

My preferation is 2000. Sure, XP boots faster and stuff, but do you know why? - Well, me neither, can't remember.. Read it in an article in my PC Magazine

for a debian like "Live CD" with all the features of a great installation try Knoppix http://www.knoppix.org.

You can download it for free from Microsoft, a 180 day trial, or if it's 80 days or something). I'm about to install it when I get my HDD working again.

Well Quarms with Win2k is that you have to install Service Pack 2 , Then the Msblaster Fix , and Download 1/2 gig of Patches Before you even start...
Win98 Se.... Unstable and full of F^&*-ups...
Az for XP , Kiddy looking interface... and can't find the simplelist things that seem to be getting more and more harder to find...
Windows overall is a Resource Munching HDD bogging POS {Piece of S$%T} ....
But for some dumb Reason I still use it .... *Sez alot don't it!*, Dunno what it is ...
Perhaps familiar teritory and not wanting to Explore outside my Comfort zone....?
I'am looking for a good mall Cheap and Fast that will boost an old PIII 500 with 256MB Ram and onboard INTEL 810 Graphics Card upto it's True Potentual't see the point in getting the Lattest and The Greatest.... basically because 6mths down the line you find that it is't so Great and that Microsoft have an Entire Database "Mentioned in some Ula..<Whateva>" that you never read cause it's 10 Screenfulls Long and writen for someone with a Doctorate in Computer Science.......
Anwayz.. I Have a Question , which is better for 3D Gaming 98Se/Win2k I have an old PIII blah blah blah <See Above> and standard everything , the INTEL 810 onboard Graphics card can be set to use system Ram to Boost it up a lil...
The Game I want to play is Wolfinstien the new one.. work's with 2k but is Slow

Depends on if you're aiming for the retail one which is not coming untill 05-06, or you'll be satisfied with the one out on the black/net already. Though I do NOT encourage to illegaly copy their OS, since they actually put quite hard work into it and deserve the credit and cash.

Thats true..but the one on the net is the alpha version, pointless to install since software/drivers aren't designed for it and its still pretty buggy.

Dec 23 2003, 11:13 PM
it depends on your system, if you have a bit older system and not enough ram etc for Windows XP or 2003, i suggest you use Win98SE with all patches etc, cuz it will let your pc run at higher speed because it don't take up that much system resources as the others, also for gaming it is the best platform as winxp had alot of problems running a bit older games, as for the newer ones they should work, or there should be a patch available for them, anyway i suggest you won't even go near Me or 2000 as they where just some bugs with a gui and are very unstable and merely released for making money

For now it's XP but their best work would probably be Longhorn. Take a look at the features and some screenshots.
I've also seen some gui (graphical user interface) screenshots in a magazine that looked almost like linux.

windows XP Pro seems like the most stable version of windows I have used, when I ran Win98 I would have a major Crash once ever3-4 weeks (Requiring complete reinstall via ghost backup). I switched to XP about 6 months ago and have had to reisnstall twice. I just installed Redhat Linux dualbooting with XP pro and am learning Linux.
Does anyone have any opinions on Lindows operating system? would like to hear on the new Lindows 4.5

Choices
1st choice. Win2k Pro due to the way the OS handles memory allocation via the kernel.
2nd choice. WinXP Pro due to the new way the OS handles memory allocation via the kernel. Since it allows 3rd party drivers to directly access the kernel which win2k doesn't allow. It still handles memory via the kernel better than 9x but not as well as win2k does.
