Full Version: Traceroute
jomo
well id like to start off with, this is a great website for learning lots of good stuff.

alright heres my question. i would like to know if there is a way to run a traceroute that would give me the physical address (as in street address) of an IP address. i can run a visual traceroute, but that only gives me a vague area of where the IP is or the ISP may be. So, is there a way to trace an IP to its actual location with some sort of progam?

all the help is greatly appreciated! thanks

neotrace... sometimes gives you the address. And it shows an approximation of where it might be.

there is no such thing as a direct address... neo trace will give the ISP's address.

Neotrace will give you the WHOIS information of an ip, if it is available. You can do the same thing from Internic.

But whois gives you the physical information of the managing company, this may or may not have anything to do with the router's physical address. Visual traceroute used to work because people included the latitude and logitude in their host information. But most folks don't do that anymore.

The way I try to analyze it is that most providers have a location code they put in the reverse dns. Sometimes it is very cryptic like 'co' for Chicago but othertimes it's pretty clear like 'sc' (santa clara of course biggrin.gif ) Ok, it takes some guesswork and experience, I'm not certain if a computer program could figure it out unless we made a database of the codes that providers use (sounds like a fun project!)
