Im currently running Serv-U, but I would like to switch to another server. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what would be a good choice? Preferably one that allows file execution.
Thanks in advance.

Well there are allot FTP servers and the admin can always execute files with site exec i guess.
I only use serv-u because i haven't got any problem with it. But if im not mistaking there is already a topic about this here on GSO

there r enough good ftp-servers i think like ioftpd is goood but much more difficult to setup then serv-u..slimftpd is good too i heard but havent tried it. i also want something else then serv-u cuz serv-u almost cuts the speed in half.

If you want to switch then, go with IO-FTPD (http://www.ioftpd.com/). IO FTPd is written for (and by) the site-scene, but works well as normal or dump ftp daemon too. It has all necessary add-ons like xferstats, racing, nuking, etc.
But if you only need more speed in Serv-U, then follow this magic trick (common knowledge btw ):
- Open servu daemon admin - Open server - Click Settings (server settings, not domain settings) - Click last tab "advanced" - Fill in at "Send Buffer": 99999 bytes - Fill in at "Receive Buffer": 99999 bytes - Save settings - Do speedcheck on ftp ---> WAY faster
If the ftp doesn't become faster after this trick, other daemons like Raiden or IO won't make a (big) difference either.
at home i use BulletProof FTP Server, has all i need

Use ChamFTP

Mar 17 2004, 08:35 PM
tinyftpd is very slim and real light, supports fxp and has site execution. only downside is the fact it has no config ini for accounts.

look at your .ini's then you'll know which files you need to start/run raidenftpd

RaidenFTPD uses a set of configuration files, usually distinguishable by [servername].[extension] where extension is .user (for userconfiguration), .ftpd (general daemon settings), .vfs (virtual file system), .allow (IP and such allowed).
For remote administration set yourself as root in the userlevel.

I use Servu but am having a problem remotely admining the server.
Logs in but then just seems to hang there.
Using the same server and ini file on my (cabled) network machine works fine, so I'm guessing this problem may have something to do with me being behind a firewall.
Do I need to open any ports to remotely admin a servu server?

surely thats not very constructive if everyone took your approach schools and unis would be empty as would this forum - forums are about sharing knowledge and creating a friendly community atmosphere. Its not as if he is asking "how do i hack" I too would like to be pointed in the direction of a tutorial

is this just on one box, or on all you have tried?
Servu Administrator can take a little longer to log in that it would if you where logging in via a ftp client.
See what the connect icon shows, is it ghosted/active and double check that the account is in fact an FULL admin account.

Not sure how to describe the icon... seems to have a yellowish edging to it when you click on it.
I'm running the server via a command line with the INI file.
In the INI I have the line: Maintenance=System (under my USER=.... section)
Is that enough to give "FULL" admin facilities ?
Is there a guide anywhere that explains exactly the format of the INI file?

Well, in fact I know how to install and configure a glftpd, with all the scripts it needs, ioftpd is quite the same, but under windows, and my question wasn't how to configure ioFTPD (I can do with this easily...) but how to install it on a remote computer so that it is hidden.
So, if someone has a tut' about this, he's still welcome lol

what do you want to hide? run it local and you will see no icon present or no window popup. first install it local and configure it. for ioftp all you need to do is use some tool to hide the running process from taskmanager.

Just grab a version below 5.4 and rename/hex-edit it like you do with serv-u. Disable the systray-icon in the ini file. Then install with srvany/instsrv. Versions above 5.4 have a rename protection. Rename the ioFTPD.exe and it won't start up anymore.... This is the author's way of making sure his ftpd isn't used for pubstro's.

i tried ioftpd for a while but ended up switching back to serv-u. its annoying to have a .ioFTPD file in every directory i enter. if anyone knows how to turn that off then id like to know, it was a decent ftpd until i lost a box due to that fact.
and to those who need help with ioftpd, you should look on google for ioftpd's site, the documentation will help.
