Im currently running Serv-U, but I would like to switch to another server. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what would be a good choice? Preferably one that allows file execution.

Thanks in advance.
DumpZ
Well there are allot FTP servers and the admin can always execute files with site exec i guess.

I only use serv-u because i haven't got any problem with it. But if im not mistaking there is already a topic about this here on GSO
OC314
there r enough good ftp-servers i think like ioftpd is goood smile.gif but much more difficult to setup then serv-u..slimftpd is good too i heard but havent tried it.
i also want something else then serv-u cuz serv-u almost cuts the speed in half.

regards

"i also want something else then serv-u cuz serv-u almost cuts the speed in half."

Thats also one of the reasons I want to switch.
TheAngel
im using Serv-u and sometimes RaidenFTPD
its more easy to config then ioftpd
try it
Flapdrol
If you want to switch then, go with IO-FTPD (http://www.ioftpd.com/).
IO FTPd is written for (and by) the site-scene, but works well as normal or dump ftp daemon too. It has all necessary add-ons like xferstats, racing, nuking, etc.

But if you only need more speed in Serv-U, then follow this magic trick (common knowledge btw smile.gif ):

- Open servu daemon admin
- Open server
- Click Settings (server settings, not domain settings)
- Click last tab "advanced"
- Fill in at "Send Buffer": 99999 bytes
- Fill in at "Receive Buffer": 99999 bytes
- Save settings
- Do speedcheck on ftp ---> WAY faster smile.gif

If the ftp doesn't become faster after this trick, other daemons like Raiden or IO won't make a (big) difference either.

Have fun & good luck!
JdEeZy
Flapdrol, that works pretty good. Thanks.
BigBen
The best setting for more speed is

Send Buffer 65534 bytes
Receive Buffer 65534 bytes

and not "99999" test it and you will see it

this is off topic but since i cant start a new topic does anyone know how to make a netcat have a password function like having it prompt for a pwd or username when u bind it to listen on a port and spawn cmd ?..
JdEeZy
pyr0, someone posted a nc with password somewhere on here. dont got the exact link, but i know it had service and password stuff. Have a search for it.
yopman
best setting is 65535

i think u ever need a server like servu/bulletproof to start on a remote machine! after starting servu i use ioftpd! it's a bit more difficult but very very good wink.gif
KuruptSoul
Use ChamFTP rolleyes.gif
DJohn84
tinyftpd is very slim and real light, supports fxp and has site execution. only downside is the fact it has no config ini for accounts.

Where would one find this Chamftpd?

SlimFTPd has site exec too right ???
pyr0
SlimFTPD doesnt have site exec u would have to use netcat to exec stuff
Niekos
Could some body tell me what are small and good ftpd's with site exec??

I know:

- serv-u
- IOftp

But could you guys give me some other good ones?
And is there an english version of tinyftpd??
Subby
heh, you would not want to use ChamFTP, it has a million holes in it

The TinyFTPD I was refering to is in the Download section of the board. Wineggdrop version. Its nice and small, command line driven.

I hope it's not too much off topic, but I'm not allowed to post a new topic smile.gif

Does anyone have a tut about how to install ioftpd remotely and set it as a system service (and perhaps how to make it hidden and link it with a bot) ???

It would be very interesting for many I think wink.gif

Thx

look at your .ini's then you'll know which files you need to start/run raidenftpd wink.gif
Krolden
RaidenFTPD uses a set of configuration files, usually distinguishable by [servername].[extension] where extension is .user (for userconfiguration), .ftpd (general daemon settings), .vfs (virtual file system), .allow (IP and such allowed).

For remote administration set yourself as root in the userlevel.

I use Servu but am having a problem remotely admining the server.

Logs in but then just seems to hang there.

Using the same server and ini file on my (cabled) network machine works fine, so I'm guessing this problem may have something to do with me being behind a firewall.

Do I need to open any ports to remotely admin a servu server?

surely thats not very constructive if everyone took your approach schools and unis would be empty as would this forum - forums are about sharing knowledge and creating a friendly community atmosphere. Its not as if he is asking "how do i hack" I too would like to be pointed in the direction of a tutorial wink.gif

its not as i dont want to share knowledge (the bit i have wink.gif) but in simple questions like that ...
if you dont know how to setup/config ioftpd you better should not start this "career"

is this just on one box, or on all you have tried?

Servu Administrator can take a little longer to log in that it would if you where logging in via a ftp client.

See what the connect icon shows, is it ghosted/active and double check that the account is in fact an FULL admin account.

Not sure how to describe the icon... seems to have a yellowish edging to it when you click on it.

I'm running the server via a command line with the INI file.

In the INI I have the line:
Maintenance=System
(under my USER=.... section)

Is that enough to give "FULL" admin facilities ?

Is there a guide anywhere that explains exactly the format of the INI file?

Well, in fact I know how to install and configure a glftpd, with all the scripts it needs, ioftpd is quite the same, but under windows, and my question wasn't how to configure ioFTPD (I can do with this easily...) but how to install it on a remote computer so that it is hidden.

So, if someone has a tut' about this, he's still welcome lol

what do you want to hide?
run it local and you will see no icon present or no window popup.
first install it local and configure it.
for ioftp all you need to do is use some tool to hide the running process from taskmanager.

Just grab a version below 5.4 and rename/hex-edit it like you do with serv-u. Disable the systray-icon in the ini file. Then install with srvany/instsrv. Versions above 5.4 have a rename protection. Rename the ioFTPD.exe and it won't start up anymore.... This is the author's way of making sure his ftpd isn't used for pubstro's.
ThomTom
ok, thx for answers wink.gif

i would like to know how to configure ioftpd cause im on serv-u and in anoying me ^^
help?
cowsonfire
i tried ioftpd for a while but ended up switching back to serv-u. its annoying to have a .ioFTPD file in every directory i enter. if anyone knows how to turn that off then id like to know, it was a decent ftpd until i lost a box due to that fact.

and to those who need help with ioftpd, you should look on google for ioftpd's site, the documentation will help.
nicolas9510
well i can follow the documentation but i still cant get it right:/
i am behind a rooter
i configures my maiun ip adress and my local adress on the ioftp.ini but it doesn't want to work
cougar
I use hidden serv-u most of the times on stro's. But Raiden is a very good ftp server program aswell. If someone wants these just gimme a shout wink.gif
nicolas9510
i also have a modded version of servu which is a servu.dll
size : 3.5 megs
