are you talking about the x config?
yeah- laptops can be tricky , because of all the proprietary hardware.
you can change the display by editing the xf86config file, or running some utility that may have been packaged with your distro?
oh, you are talking about you X display right?

The X-Server is a GUI for unix systems ( like the "desktop" in windows ).
The Xfree86-Config file is in /etc/X11/XF86Config(-4). Open it with your favorite text editor, search for 800x600 and edit it

To install the Nvidia driver, you have to kill the X-Server.. for example by pressing ctrl-alt-shift.
If you have SuSe/Redhat/Mandrake it can happen, that the X-Server restarts automatically. So you have to type "ps -e" and kill the gdm/kdm process ( kill -9 <process-id> )

So which distribution do you use?

Ok... to learn some basics about linux and to get your Nvidia problem solved, you should compile a kernel yourself. If you want to do so, look at
http://armin.emx.at/kernel_2.6/kernel_2.6_howto.html and at
http://kerneltrap.org/node/view/1804

Also, if you really want to figure out how to use linux, get rid of the Xwindows environment and stick with the CLI for a month or two (or three or four) until you are comfortable w/out the GUI. By that time you will know how to compile software, use configuration files, view/kill processes and most importantly, you should know how to use man and info.

Yes... so i would recommend a linux distribution you have to install per CLI ( i would take Gentoo, www.gentoo.org ). Read the documentation and you will learn a lot.

Sometimes you can emulate a Windows program with wine ( www.winehq.com ), but try to use Linux software if it is possible.

this works on suse 9.0
first of all u have to install the kernelsources (kernel-source.rpm)
ok, on console log in as "su" type your root password
type "init 3"
than run your nvidia.............installer.run
"sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-5336-pkg1.run"
after that configure your xserver by
"sax2 -m 0=nvidia"
type init 5
now you may configure your screen size with sax2
if sax2 says your 3d accelaration is not enabled, ignore it, it is enabled

Man,
Why do you need those "EXE" files?.. You will get better alternatives for all those things in Linux... Just tell me what are those important EXE files which you want to use, I can tell you the better one which will do the work in Linux... Hey hey..!!. About Display issue, Don't jump in to everything, Take a breathe and read before you do things which you dont know well.. Ok?.. Saying this because I was like that... Experiance is a great teacher.. right or wrong?
Nice day man,
