Nmap is the grand daddy of port scanners in linux. Also there are other advanced port scanners like "hping" that even allow you to spoof the packets for scanning. For now i suggest that you stick to mastering nmap. There are numeros tutorials/papers that explain to you the inner workings of nmap. I suggest that you first take time to understand some details of TCP/IP and the methodologies used by nmap's different scanning techniques.

A lot of those scanners originated in C code. Find them in that format and you can compile them yourself, some porting may be necessary though.

You can use nessus from here. It's a great program... they update the plugins often to keep up with current vulnerabilites, and you can use it from the cmd line, gui, or remotely if you enable nessusd. You can even setup nessusd on a remote *nix box and use the win32 client to control it smile.gif... oh, and it incorporates scanners like Nmap, as well as many others. biggrin.gif If you're looking for something like x-scan, this is definetely the way to go. It creates detailed reports which i find to be much better than x-scan's reports.

A nice and lot of scanners came from linux......just browse this site... http://packetstormsecurity.nl/ and surf its links.... cool.gif

I would also suggest nessus. Install it on a linux box and u can connect to it from a Windows box if you so choose. You could also experiment with linux tools in VMware on a linux image.

Nmap and Nessus are great. Nessus is a vulnerability assessment tool that does much more. If you're just looking for a great scanner, I would recommend starting with nmap.
