Its deletes all the unused bytes and writes them over about 10 times - or however many u specify - with random binary digits so that its impossible (or at least we hope

) to retrieve the original info

heres a crazy idea dont take it seriously
if you want to "really" wipe your disk, constuct make a large electromagnet and sit it on top of ur disk, when u want to wipe it just switch on electromagnet and bam! no more data

The idea with the elektro Magnet is quite funny but the disk is crashed after that action and can`t be used anymore

its not about wiping the disk - its about wiping the "unused" bytes and it does that by "whipping!" ie writing random binary digits over and over so that the original cant be retrieved
Electromagnets with hard drives are fun to play with as long as it isn't ur hard drive

I think they are all slow.... If you want to be secure (and outsmart forensics) it just takes time.
I have used BCwhipe (included with BestCrypt) and found it to be a good (but also slow) whiper.

Have you ever tried something nasty on the work-PC? In that case better learn this stuff! Empying Recylce Bin isn't sufficient mate. If they want they can find the pron site you visited some time ago. Ignorance CAN get you fired.
