Yorn this has nothing to do with spoofing your ip. what this does is to make it look to the server that you clicked on a link on a page you have already been authorized to view on the domain. the referrer request tag is added to the html header and used for validation on websites where the webmaster isnt the brightest or best informed so there's quite a few sites you can access this way.

sometime people post links to college web sites that have online book. either because of all the hits or the publishers contact them they add a referrer tag to their pages in the hopes of keeping outsiders out and this way they wont be breaking their license agreement with the publishers.
