I finally made up my mind to learn socket programming ... huh. I checked out amazon for books on socket programming in C and found the following:

1. TCP/IP Sockets in C: Practical Guide for Programmers (The Practical Guides Series)
by Michael J. Donahoo, Kenneth L. Calvert, S. Donahoo

2. UNIX Network Programming by W. Richard Stevens (for advanced users)

3. Linux Socket Programming by Example (By Example)
by Warren Gay (Author)

Any personal experience with the above mentioned books or do u have anything better to offer ?

P.S: I did C/C++ back in Uni so I have some knowledge

I got "Beginning LInux programming" by Richard Stones and Neil Matthew (ISBN 1-861002-97-1).

While the first few sections are really basic, theres an excellent section on sockets, also very well laid out sections on debugging, processes/signals/, TCL, device drivers, and programming for X and Gnome.

While your probably looking for a dedicated socket programming publication, this is an excellent primer for starting on sockets and also if you wanted to mess about with GUIs for X or Gnome.

I am thinking of using java to implement this but it will be much easier hmm... so i will use C.

"Linux Socket programming" here by Sam Walton. This book is great IMO. ISBN 0-672-31935-7 . I think its out of print or something, though.
