How does a hacker get past a hub ?

Because it gives the user a different ip , it must be impossible to detect the real ip ?

And if they get around it how can you protect yourself against it ?

Cause my neighbour , who has my static ip , is always trying to get to me.

I want to be a step ahaid of him and protect myself against it.

Are you sure that you are talking about a hub here? A hub provides no protection. It is a broadcast device.
virus
^^ Exactly.
A hub basically acts like a repeater, it re-transmits the bits. Its a layer one (physical) device. Only a router or other layer three (network) device can be used to protect/mask your IP address.

I think he means a router, theres really not that many options there unless you can hack the router. But the majority of regular home users leave the remote admin option in the router setting set to off so not much luck there. If your behind a good router/firewall consider yourself fairly safe. (If its configured right) Just make sure you dont leave any unused ports open. I suggest disabling netbios over tcp/ip and blocking 139, 3389 ports since these are the ports that nt-pass hackers usually scan for.

Ok , I will explain it like this.

By you guys I'm now confused, so I will refere to the router/hub as "the device".

This is my situation.

At home I have my own little save network which involves "the device" and 2 PC's connectecd through it, and through "the device" it's connected to the internet.

Now , when I put the two PC's on msn and I sent a file >1MB from PC1 to PC2, and I use the command netstat -n I will get the ip from PC2.But When I scan the ip where I deliberetly left 1 port open to check if I have the right ip , doesn't sign up.

And when I go to the site :
http://www.stilllistener.com/checkpoint1/

where the text stands "YOUR IP": it schows 212.223....

and when I go a bit lower to "HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR" there I will find my real ip 81.83.......This is my real ip , cause it tested positive with the portscan (and it's really my IP).

so , 1 it's a hub with special powers or 2 it's a router where you can go through as easy as stealing candy from a baby.

So I ask myself, how does this page get my real ip and how can I protect myself from people who know a way to get my REAL IP whithout sending me to this page?

or 2 it's a router where you can go through as easy as stealing candy from a baby.

or 3 it`s a router and all you can see is the ip it has...
