I think that anyone here should at least know about some old but basic things, such as TCP/IP suite and how this works and about C/C++ (not only for writing an exploit or a patch but as well to be able understand an existing one !!!)
Here is a great chance.
I post these books cause they require only a little time to read and they have everything!!!
