pretty lame i know but i set up a telnet server so i can use my linux box from work.

i am trying to change the bannerbut am having no luck and everything i've found when searching is incorect or for the wroung version. any help would be great

Red Hat Linux release 7.0 (Guinness)

/etc/issue is displayed at login, whereas /etc/motd is shown after a successful login,

No, it was a typo.. it was supposed to be "banner, but"

Not sure what you meant there, but check /etc/motd
