This was posted to Bugtraq a couple of days ago, I've started the process of creating the seed file for the 10 character alpha-numeric. So far it's been running for a day now and I'm only halfway through the first of five files.

Once I'm done I may burn them onto CD and send them out to folks (for some minor fee to cover costs) so they don't have to spend the time.

Hello,

We have implemented an instant windows password cracker named RainbowCrack.

It is based on Philippe Oechslin's faster time-memory trade-off technique.

(http://lasecwww.epfl.ch/php_code/publications/search.php?ref=Oech03)

This tool is an specialized LanManager hash cracker. On an 666MHz

workstation, we can:

1. Crack 10 alpha passwords in 74 seconds

2. Crack 10 alpha-numeric passwords in 184 seconds

It is absolutely cryptanalysis!

it did 10,000 chains in 3,30 min on my comp
80x3.30=??? not that long

and it actually works even with one file you can find some results

i would call this tool as a no 1 risk to sysops around the world

could someone explain me a bit how it works?!?
i dl-ed .pdf, but couldnt understand it completly.
this is how i see it (please, correct me): u have certain parameters, which u use to create a list of all passwords, based on max permutations. and its written in a file. the when performing a bruteforce, u load whole file in RAM, and from there its much faster to test them all in common bruteforce method.

Now did I get it right?
I have a lot of questions... But this is basic one.
