Have a look in the networking section manu, Ive posted a paper on setting up IPTables which should help you come up with suitable rulesets.
Personnaly, I use IPTAbles, and I also use Firebreather firewall (I do like my GUIs sometimes!:)) I cant find a link, just google for it.
As for making your own firewall, Im presuming you are talking about setting rules for IPTables (or ipchains if your running on a 2.2 kernal) in which case there are plenty of tuts both on this site and beyond that can help.
Hope this helps you!

Yeah, pretty much everyone uses IPTables on linux as it is a serious professional level stateful firewall. Most of the linux "firewalls" you see out there are actually just GUI front ends or script generators for IPTables.

If you have the time to learn IPTables that is the way to go. If you don't want to learn linux app stuff and just want to use linux as a a different OS then use any linux firewall is better than none.
Hint: Skip IPChains, its a older semi-obsolete firewall method.

you can use iptable by using shorewall tools/interface
it's a very simple and RPM package;
if you use shorewall + webmin (also RPM) you can manage your firewall by the web. very simple

what type of firewall are you creating a single system router/firewall or just a firewall in the host?
For single I'd go with IPcop.

Which uses IPtables but works alot better as a router you can create a DMZ and alot of other great features.

I would also recommend getting to grasps with using and configuring IPTable rulesets.
It be of great learning experience to you, and will help you to see what IPCops is actually doing, and will help in accuratly configuring IPTable based applications in the future!
As Dissolutions said, any problems, just ask away!
