Evidence gathered by Microsoft, the FBI, and the Secret Service will be released linking the worldwide attacks made against computers running the Windows operating system to "terrorist activity."

Sources inside the U.S.-based software maker say recent attacks against from the "Blaster" worm and its variants, coupled with an email virus called "SoBig-F" show signs of a coordinated attack by an entity wanting to disrupt world commerce. Microsoft is cooperating with both the FBI and the Secret Service and will report their findings in the next few days.

While at present no terrorist organizations have claimed responsibility for these attacks in cyberspace, Microsoft is an obvious target for terrorists as the largest, most recognizable, and immensely profitable software company in the world.
The Blaster worm exploits a flaw in the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) component used by Microsoft Windows, the operating system installed on an estimated 90% of all home and corporate desktop computers worldwide. A patch was made available free of charge by Microsoft in July 2003, but few home or corporate users downloaded the fix.

The Blaster worm seeks out any Internet-enabled Windows computer without the fix, installs malicious code that takes control of the computer, and beings attacking a Microsoft corporate Web site used to distribute software fixes to Windows users.

Ha! they'll try and pin anything on so called 'terrorism' now.

I think the word's lost it's meaning

All i would say is they need to concentrate on more stuff than the internet, and start looking at real life, most things that are done on the net are by Teenagers!
and everyone must admit we've all at least infected someone with a trojan before right......even if it was with a friends permission smile.gif

Internet terrorism isnt really as worrying as something that could happen in real life like............Sep 11th

...........
................
So i guess The Government and FBI etc.... and microsoft should really wise up!

But throught the internet, something like that, or worse, could happen again.

Just think, the big New York airports, Washington, LA, San Fransico, all of their computer systems lock up for even just an hour due to a virus distributed by Al Quaeda (s?) or someone like that.

Or maybe every (hell, even an eighth, or just in one state) of the traffic lights in the US/a state go out. Even if they just went out for two hours..

Imagine the mayhem, confusion, and chaos that would insue.

Granted, I think it's more important to stop the physical attacks too, but they do need to keep an eye on the internet. (Everyone, not just the American government.)

(Everyone, not just the American government.)

Agree with this strongly. Not just the USA. All other countries need to put more $$$ and resources into what could possibly be a worse attack then Sept 11 sad.gif

1. They try to linking hacking with terror , because then they can judge every "hacker" scriptkiddie etc easier , the punishment become harder ....

2. The panic and fear that were created @ 11 September is schizophrenic ...
Hey you can walk through the door accross the street and can hit by bus ....
Usa started 2 unnecessary senseless wars after the attack and many before , now the question who is the real terrorist ? ...

i agree with [sunny] and i know this is a bit off topic, but anyway...

people (mostly americans) think that terrorists are some mindless evil-doers, who preform such evil things (9-11) just couse they are evil. thats not true. they are organized, they are planning, they have purpose and meaning. thats not easy thing to accomplish. they want to say something with those acts.
they are not some bunch of mad people, creating mayhem out of their maddnes. wtc it simbolic target. it's a message.

think what could happen if they ram those aircrafts, for example, at nuclear power plants, which are much easier target.

there are always two sides of a story. think about the other one.

I have to respectfully disagree with you on that point. So much of our society today is hooked up to electronics and the internet. We pretty much have come dependent and acustomed to it now. What if all your bank records were wiped out? You went to the bank and they said "sorry you have $0 in your acct". How could you pay for anything?

For example, the black out they had on the east coast and partially into Canda? What if that happened to the US and lets say lasted a week? How catastrophic would that be to our (US) economy as well as the worlds economy? Lets just be more hypothetical and say some one mangaged to crash the stock market? The great depression Part II?

Internet terrorism might not have an immediate consequence like Sept. 11th but it can greatly affect us and the world as a whole greatly if done properly (unproperly).

Absolutely nothing.........besides a big fireball and a bunch of dead people on the airplane and on the ground if they were outside of the facility. Nuclear power plants at least in the US are hardened against both missle attacks as well as being able to withstand and incoming airliner if need be.

I'm curious as to what sensless wars after the attack you might be reffering too? And the many before as well please...

Not directed towards Sunny or anyone else posting here, but as you can tell by my replies, I get pretty vocal when this topic comes up.

I don't know how old any of you are or where you live. I'm 27 years old and have been around for at least some time.

People when they sign up in the army realize that they have to possibly one day risk and possibly give up their lives. But I sure don't recall when the thousands of civilians signed up to risk and GIVE up their lives on Sept 11th for ANY war. I could just imagine, so we don't like the French and their way of doing things (I have nothing against the French) and we just say 'heh, lets go drop a couple of bombs in oh lets say Paris and kill a few thousand women, children and men. The Effiel tower looks like a nice target. What would people think of us then?

I was born in the US and love my country. I would fight for it, if I was required to. Fight till the last breath of air expelled from my lungs. If the US is such a bad country......why does everyone want to keep coming here???? Even illegally people sneak into our country. We have some great rights here. Freedom of speech, religions, sexual orientation. Hey, at least you won't be punished, tortured for saying you don't like the way the president runs the country.

Again this isn't directed towards any paticular person and I mean no offence to anyone. It just angers me when people try and justify the killing of innocent people ANYWHERE in this world.

Everyones political views are respected at this site for one reason; they arent discussed.

In the current worldwide political climate, and on a news item like this which involves both computer security and "homeland" security, it is very easy for a topic to be completly blown off course and to turn into an opinion fist fight.

It would be my first instinct to lock this topic but that is neither my place or compulsion.

Just keep politics (and religion, just in case that was the next step for anyone) out of your posts in future, no matter what the bait.

Just my 2 cents!
