yea. thanks for that well timed.

i been playing with slack recently and found out that after trying to install the latest nvidia drivers for my gf4ti4200 i got a error saying there were missing header files for the kernel installed. after trying to automatically solving this problem by downoading the new ones from the FTP another error message said they couldn't be found at all. so i am thinking a fresh compile of the latest kernel.

maybe this would solve this problem?

this are my early assumptions anyway. i think i better google.com/linux kernel header files.

althought it says in the README that if you are running redhat you just need to installt he source rpm for the kernel.

anyway. thanks again. very informative for a n00b smile.gif

RedHats up2date system is just the nuts! Kernel upgrades, driver updates, kitchen sinks come straight to you and are installed while you make coffee or strip wall paper!

Glad it helped bri! smile.gif

Like the previous post on a issue with a graphics adapter, the "why should someone consider updating thier kernel" is not clearly stated. Like new or additional hardware support, security etc....

One short yet clear paragraph would help new users greatly.

Just my opinion

I agree with you fastlanwan, but the article is more directed towards those who say "Im going to upgrade my kernel for x reasons, how do I go about it?"

But again, I agree with your point that the article is lacking in that department.

Ill see if I can add to it somewhat! smile.gif

just might point out im running slack. not redhat. if i remember slack doesn't come with an autoupdater, unlike mandkrake and redhat. which are both excellent.

Ive added that extra paragraph...thanks for the suggestion fastlanwan! biggrin.gif

Is it the Linux IA32 driver your downloading bri?

As well, when you install the drivers from the nVidia web site you have to open up your /etc/XF86Config (or XF86Config-4) file and change the Driver line from "nv" to "nvidia" .

That shouldnt have given the error for missing header files, so perhaps an upgrade might be what youll have to do!

Let us know how you get on! smile.gif

well i need to install the driver first then change and edit the xconfig.

just that the drivers can't install first and i can't really change the xconfig to nvidia if they don't exsist. strange. but i was told a few other people have had problems with nvidia drivesr and slack. they left the default drivers on.

sure i let you know how it goes. long weekend ahead. so i'll be busy.

For Grub:

Or you can edit it... basically fill in what you need to do...

Heres a site that basically outlines it in some pretty good detail.
