looks like cisco may have a problem...................

Subject: Important Information from Easynet

Dear customer,

You may already be aware that some of our customers have been experiencing problems with their Cisco router locking up and requiring a reboot to restore normal operation.

Having engaged upon extensive investigations and liaison with the manufacturer we have identified what we believe to be causing this symptom.

In due course Cisco will issue a revision to their software that can be loaded onto your router; in the meantime, we are in the process of remotely making some minor configuration changes to it to prevent the problem recurring.

This is to deny inbound IP packets to port 1666 (used by a demonstration application 'MAZE') which we believe currently causes the router to experience a buffer overrun.

At the same time we are configuring your router to pass logs of these events to a monitoring server on our own network; this will enable us to trace the root cause of the problem.

If we experience difficulty in connecting to your router we may call to request that you perform a reboot so that we can proceed with the reconfiguration.

Once your connection is restored and the changes are done we are confident that you should not experience any further problems.

We are aware that some customers have existing, complex 'access lists' (sets of access rules) already in place; we are aware of these and any amendments will be made with these in mind.

We apologise for any inconvenience that has been caused to you and assure you that this is an unusual and rare occurrence that is taken very seriously by Easynet and our supplier Cisco.

With best regards

Easynet Surestream Technical Support.
